On August 4, 1947, during a flight from Gander, Newfoundland to La Guardia Field, New York, Pan American Airways pilots Alpheus O. Powell and Walter I. White observed an unidentified flying object. Powell described the object as being about the length of a P-40 fuselage, blunt at both ends, cylindrical in shape, and having a bright orange hue. White described it as deep gold in color, reflecting light, about 15 feet in length, and 2-3 feet in depth, elliptical in shape and blunted at the ends. Both estimated the object's speed to be between 160 and 175 miles per hour.
