Cable MRN 94 DUSHANBE 259, signed ESCUDERO, UNCLASSIFIED. Tajik Air chief pilot Ed Rhodes (an American citizen) and two American pilot colleagues reported on 29 January that on 27 January, while cruising in their Boeing 747SP at 41,000 ft at 45°N, 55°E (over Kazakhstan), they encountered a brilliantly luminous object. The object approached from the east at very high speed and a much greater altitude than the 747SP, then maneuvered for some forty minutes in circles, corkscrews and rapid 90-degree turns at high G. Capt. Rhodes shot several photos with a pocket Olympus camera and promised to send copies to the embassy and to the Tajikistan Desk (Lowry Taylor) at the Department. The object eventually adopted a horizontal high-speed course and disappeared over the horizon. Because it was dark, the crew could not discern its shape; the light resembled a 'bow wave' as in a high-speed photo of a bullet in flight: a very small core trailing a much larger wave of heat/light. About forty-five minutes after the initial sighting, with the sun rising, the aircraft flew under the contrails the object had left. Rhodes estimated those contrails at roughly 100,000 ft and noted that the atmosphere there is too thin for ordinary propulsion to leave contrails; the contrails' paths reflected the maneuvers the crew had observed. Rhodes and his crew rejected the suggestion that the object might be a meteor skipping off the atmosphere — they had seen thousands of meteors and pieces of space junk in their years flying for Pan Am, and this was nothing like that. Based on speed and maneuverability, Rhodes stated his opinion (which the crew supported) that the object was extraterrestrial and under intelligent control. The embassy notes: 'WE HAVE NO OPINION AND REPORT THE ABOVE FOR WHAT IT MAY BE WORTH.'
